The inflation-week finale did not deliver the clean hold the tape wanted. As flagged in this morning's analysis, July retail sales at 08:30 Eastern and the preliminary August University of Michigan sentiment survey at 10:00 Eastern were the last two prints of a data-heavy week. Both missed, and the S&P 500 slipped 0.2 percent from Thursday's record 7,798.99 to close at 7,785.76. The index still booked a third straight weekly gain. This is the evening scorecard of what actually played out, not an instruction to act on any asset.
The Close: A Soft Fade From the Record
Cash indexes finished red, but the weekly tape stayed constructive. The S&P 500 fell 13.23 points, or 0.2 percent, to 7,785.76, giving back Thursday's first close above 7,800 without surrendering last Friday's 7,757.64 former record. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.3 percent to 26,729.16, still eking out a slight weekly gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 107.58 points, or 0.2 percent, to 53,732.41, finishing the week lower. Intraday the S&P printed as high as about 7,810 before fading into the close. The 10-year Treasury yield firmed toward 4.69 percent. Rate markets priced roughly a 31 percent chance of a September hike, a touch below the 35 percent chance flagged this morning.
- S&P 500 -0.2% to 7,785.76, off Thursday's 7,798.99 record
- Nasdaq -0.3% to 26,729.16; Dow -0.2% to 53,732.41
- S&P still booked a third straight weekly gain
- 10-year near 4.69%; September hike odds around 31%
Story of the Day: Consumers Pulled Back
The number that framed Friday landed badly. July retail sales fell 0.6 percent, the first decline in nine months, against the plus 0.1 percent consensus this morning's note had mapped. Core sales excluding autos, gasoline, building materials and food services dropped 0.4 percent, versus a 0.3 percent rise expected. Lower gas prices and weaker auto sales did some of the damage, but the miss was broader than one category. At 10:00 Eastern the preliminary August University of Michigan consumer sentiment index fell to 51.0 from July's 55.2, well below the 54.5 look-ahead, ending two months of improvement. Current conditions dropped to 51.8 and expectations to 50.6. Year-ahead inflation expectations ticked up to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent. Live levels sit on the ThriveInMarkets homepage.
- July retail sales -0.6% vs +0.1% expected, first drop in nine months
- Core sales -0.4% vs +0.3% expected
- Michigan sentiment 51.0 vs 54.5 expected, from 55.2 in July
- Year-ahead inflation expectations 4.3%, up from 4.2%
Story of the Tape: Reddit In, Applied Materials Out
Single stocks told a sharper story than the indexes. Reddit jumped about 13 percent after S&P Dow Jones Indices said the social platform will join the S&P 500 on Tuesday, August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities. JPMorgan estimated index funds will need to buy roughly 16.7 million shares. Applied Materials fell about 5 percent even after an earnings beat, as investors questioned its position versus ASML and Lam Research. SanDisk extended gains on a JPMorgan upgrade. Drone names such as AeroVironment firmed after Washington floated tariffs of up to 100 percent on imported drones. Globant slumped about 15 percent after cutting its full-year outlook. The record fade was a data reaction, not a collapse in the AI complex.
- Reddit ~+13% on S&P 500 inclusion, effective August 18
- Applied Materials ~-5% despite a beat, as the competitive position drew questions
- SanDisk firmed on a JPMorgan upgrade; Globant ~-15% on a guide cut
- Drone names lifted on talk of tariffs up to 100% on imported drones
Crypto Check: Bitcoin Still Boxed Under $64K
Digital assets stayed quiet after a week of shrugging off both CPI and PPI. Bitcoin is near 62,875 dollars, little changed from this morning's 62,900 area and still boxed under 64,000. Ether holds near 1,878 dollars, essentially flat. Gold recovered from this morning's 4,340 dollar dip to near 4,376 dollars after Thursday's reversal from a 4,449 two-month high. West Texas Intermediate firmed to about 82.33 dollars, up roughly 1.3 percent from Thursday's 81.25 settlement, as Washington kept an indefinite Iran naval blockade on the table. Bullish trigger for Bitcoin: a clean reclaim of 64,000 dollars. Bearish trigger: a slip through this week's 62,800 shelf. These are technical reference points, not instructions.
- Bitcoin ~$62,875, Ether ~$1,878, still boxed after a quiet inflation week
- Gold ~$4,376, recovering from this morning's ~$4,340 dip
- WTI ~$82.33, up from Thursday's $81.25 settlement
- BTC bullish trigger: reclaim $64,000; bearish: a break of ~$62,800
After-Hours and Overnight Watch
Friday after-hours was quiet. No mega-cap reports were due after the close. Three things are worth watching into Monday: whether Iran and Hormuz headlines keep crude bid; whether the S&P can hold above last Friday's 7,757.64 former record now that the inflation-week data run is finished; and the Reddit index addition on Tuesday, August 18. Monday's US calendar is light: Empire State manufacturing and the NAHB housing index. Bullish trigger for the S&P: a reclaim of Thursday's 7,798.99 close. Bearish trigger: a slide through 7,757.64. Invalidation of the weekly-gain tone: a break of this week's 7,728 area.
- No major Friday after-hours earnings; the large-cap calendar is quiet
- Hormuz headlines remain the weekend geopolitical wildcard
- Reddit joins the S&P Tuesday, August 18
- S&P bullish trigger: reclaim 7,798.99; bearish: a slide through 7,757.64
