US retail sales measure what retailers took in. The dates on this page are the US report, not another country's retail sales, and only when the calendar lists them.

The Census Bureau's advance retail and food services report measures the dollar value of sales. It is not adjusted for inflation, so higher prices can lift the headline without people buying more goods. The control group leaves out autos, gasoline, building materials, and food services, and it is the piece that feeds the goods-consumption estimate in GDP.
A stronger picture of real spending is generally read as support for growth and for the US dollar. Gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin mainly react through what the print implies for interest rates: firm spending alongside firm inflation can keep rates higher, which weighs on them, while weak spending can do the opposite. Because the series is nominal, a gasoline-price jump is not the same thing as households buying more. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.

The report is in dollars, not in units. If gasoline or other prices jump, the headline can rise even when the number of items sold does not. The control group and the inflation reports are the cross-check.
