Dubai just hosted one of the biggest AI meetups in the region. Governments, Big Tech, investors and one well-known crypto founder all shared a stage. Here's the quick version.

What, when and where

  • Event: Dubai AI Festival 2026, the third edition, theme "Where Intelligence Meets Opportunity".
  • When: 26-27 October 2026. Conference sessions ran 10:00-17:00 Dubai time (06:00-13:00 UTC) each day.
  • Where: Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai.
  • Who runs it: Dubai AI Campus at DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre), with the Office of the UAE Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications.

Who is going

Organisers expected attendees from 100+ countries, 150+ speakers, around 500 investors and 200 exhibitors. Names announced by DIFC include:

  • Tech: Peng Xiao (G42), Mati Staniszewski (ElevenLabs), Arvind Jain (Glean), Trevor Thompson (Scale AI), Prof. Paul Newman (Oxa).
  • Business: Hussain Sajwani (DAMAC), Sanjog Gupta (International Cricket Council).
  • Governments: ministers and officials from Telangana (India), the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre.
  • Companies taking part: AWS, Alibaba Cloud, Mistral AI, Mubadala, Snowflake, Scale AI, Dubai Future Foundation and more.

Why it matters

The big theme was moving AI from experiments to real use: in banks, airlines, government services and trade. When sovereign funds like Mubadala, state-linked AI groups like G42 and global cloud giants sit in the same room, it tells you where money and policy are heading. The Gulf wants to be an AI hub, not just a buyer of AI.

For markets, events like this rarely move prices on the day. What matters is the follow-through: partnerships, government contracts and data-centre spending announced in the weeks after.

ICP's role: Dominic Williams on "sovereign cloud"

The Internet Computer (ICP) was represented by Dominic Williams, President and Chief Scientist of the DFINITY Foundation. He presented "Sovereign cloud for the AI era" on the Innovation Stage on 27 October at 3:10 pm Dubai time (11:10 UTC).

His pitch, per DFINITY: with "Open Cloud", you build a "cloud engine" from nodes you choose by operator, country, data centre and hardware class. The idea is that countries and companies can run apps and AI on infrastructure they control, instead of depending fully on one big cloud provider.

DFINITY also backed the festival's official publication. Entrepreneur Middle East and Lucidity Insights' special report "The State of AI 2026", launched at the festival, is marked "Powered by DFINITY" and includes a feature on Williams. In it, DFINITY says Pakistan's Digital Authority and the UNDP are using its cloud engines. Those are DFINITY's own claims in a report it sponsored, so treat them as company statements.

What traders could watch

  • Any official follow-up from DFINITY: a recording, new partners, or government deals tied to cloud engines.
  • Whether other Gulf announcements from the festival turn into real contracts.
  • How the "AI + crypto infrastructure" story develops. Narratives can move sentiment, but they don't replace price confirmation.
  • Upcoming macro events on our economic calendar, which usually matter more for crypto than conference news.
