The Department of Labor reports how many people filed for unemployment insurance for the first time that week, plus continuing claims for people still receiving benefits. It is a weekly series, so it updates the labor picture between the monthly payrolls reports.
A sustained rise in claims is generally read as a cooling labor market. That can soften the US dollar and ease the rate pressure on gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin. A very low print is generally read as a still-tight labor market, which can support the dollar. A single holiday week is a poor guide on its own. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
