October 2026 CPI · 15:30 Cyprus · 8:30 ET

CPI measures the average change in prices paid by urban consumers for a fixed basket of goods and services. The report quotes a headline rate, which includes everything, and a core rate, which leaves out food and energy. Both are shown month on month and year on year.

Why it moves markets

A hotter CPI print is generally read as a reason for the Fed to keep interest rates higher. That lifts the US dollar and bond yields, and it can weigh on gold, the Nasdaq, and bitcoin because those assets are sensitive to the discount rate. A cooler print is generally read the other way. Energy can move the headline on its own, so the core rate is the line that says whether the move is broader. This is how the release is used. It is not a forecast of the next print and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
