As flagged in this morning's analysis, Thursday opened on a gold reclaim, overnight E-mini futures near 7,685 against Wednesday's 7,667 cash close, and a three-path map. The gold-hold path did the index work. Governor Christopher Waller did the rate work. The S&P 500 closed at 7,748, up 1.06 percent, through Monday's 7,686 bullish trigger and Friday's 7,711.76. Snowflake, the after-hours jumper the morning said would be tested at the open, closed up 16.6 percent. Bitcoin reclaimed 80,000 dollars and Friday's 81,455 high. This is the evening scorecard, not an instruction.

Story of the Day: Waller Cools the Hike, Snowflake Holds the Jump
Waller was the microphone. At a Reuters NEXT event he said he is inclined to hold the funds rate in the 3.50 to 3.75 percent range on September 15-16 if August inflation keeps cooling. "Give disinflation a chance," he said. If inflation comes in hot, he would consider a hike. CME FedWatch took September hike odds from about 62 percent this morning to about 48 to 50 percent. The 10-year yield eased toward 4.75 percent from Wednesday's 4.78 percent close.
The data-fade path the morning put third did not print. ISM services rose to 55.4 from 54.1, above the 54.2 consensus. Employment stayed in contraction at 47.8. The prices index climbed to 72.6, the highest since August 2022. Initial jobless claims printed 206,000. Activity beat. Prices did not ease. The tape still bid because Waller lowered the hike bar.
Snowflake was the name the morning put on the open. Wednesday's after-hours jump of about 23 percent toward 376 dollars was tested and held most of the move. Snowflake closed at 356.47 dollars, up 16.6 percent. Nvidia confirmed a 12.93 billion dollar purchase of Hugging Face, its largest outright acquisition, with a close aimed at the first half of 2027. Shares still finished higher.
The hot-oil path tagged its trigger and still lost the session. West Texas Intermediate printed 91.73 dollars after a high at 93.13 through the morning's 92.29 handle, then faded. Spot gold is near 4,472 dollars (TradingView 4,472.195), extending the morning's 4,428 reclaim after a high at 4,511. Traders watching 4,400 as the reclaimed reference. These are technical reference points, not instructions.

After the bell the prints split. Samsara jumped about 12.5 percent. Lululemon dropped about 17 percent. Guidewire Software fell about 18 percent. Those reactions will be tested at Friday's open.
Three things frame overnight and Friday: whether 7,748 holds as the new cash reference, whether Bitcoin keeps the 80,000 handle, and whether August payrolls at 12:30 UTC Friday confirm Waller's patience or reopen the hike path. August CPI lands September 11, the print Waller tied to his vote. Traders watching 7,748 as the cash reference. Bullish trigger: a push through today's 7,757 high toward the 52-week high at 7,816.70. Bearish trigger: a slide through today's 7,687 open, then Wednesday's 7,667. Docket: week-ahead note. Calendar: calendar.
- After hours: Samsara ~+12.5%; Lululemon ~-17%; Guidewire ~-18%
- Friday 12:30 UTC: August payrolls, last hard labor print before the September FOMC
- S&P bullish trigger: reclaim 7,757 then 7,816.70; bearish: a slide through 7,687 then 7,667
- September 11: August CPI, the print Waller tied to a hold versus a hike
