Story of the Day: Oil Tags $94.73, Amgen Sinks 10%
The morning's hot-oil path tagged its trigger. West Texas Intermediate printed a high at 94.73 dollars (Investing.com, MarketWatch), through this morning's 94.20 high and Monday's 93.29. Live WTI sat near 94.35 dollars as of 20:33 UTC, up from Friday's 91.48 settlement. Range today about 91.83 to 94.73. Brent briefly neared 99.50 dollars (AP) after Houthi strikes on Saudi energy facilities. Traders watching today's 94.73 high as the cleared reference. A slip back through Friday's 91.48 would fade the premium.
The single-stock tape was health. Amgen fell about 10 percent to near 394 dollars after Novartis said pelacarsen failed to cut cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke in Phase 3, despite lowering Lp(a). Novartis ADRs dropped about 14 percent. BMO cut Amgen to Market Perform. Stryker fell about 8 to 9 percent. On the other side, Intel jumped about 9 percent near 105 dollars on reports of October CPU price hikes. Corning rose about 7.6 percent on a Verizon optical-fiber deal. Bloom Energy rallied about 11 percent on an S&P 500 addition effective September 21.
- WTI high $94.73, live ~$94.35; Brent briefly neared $99.50
- Amgen ~-10% to near $394; Novartis ADRs ~-14%
- Intel ~+9% near $105; Corning ~+7.6%; Bloom Energy ~+11%
- Oil key reference: today's $94.73; a break of Friday $91.48 would fade the premium
Gold Fades Through $4,365
The gold-fade path also printed. Spot gold last printed about 4,358 dollars (TradingView 4,358.285; Investing.com about 4,358), through the 4,400 handle held this morning and through last Wednesday's 4,365 reference. Session range about 4,355 to 4,443 after an Asian high faded. The metal sat at 4,408 at 08:00 UTC and gave back about 50 dollars as the 10-year bid won the day. Traders watching 4,365 as broken. A reclaim of 4,400 would repair the fade. A slide through September 2's 4,283 would deepen it. These are technical reference points, not instructions.
- Gold ~$4,358; TradingView $4,358.285 as of September 8
- Through this morning's $4,408 and through Wednesday's $4,365

- BTC bullish trigger: reclaim $80,000 then $82,000; bearish: a break of $75,000
Overnight Watch: China CPI, Then PPI and Oracle
Three scenarios frame the next session, not a recommendation. In a contained-oil path, WTI slips back through 94 and the S&P leans on today's 7,673.52 close. In a hot-oil path, a hold above today's 94.73 high would add another inflation impulse into Thursday PPI and Friday CPI. In a gold-fade path, a slide through September 2's 4,283 would confirm the rate-hike bid that already broke 4,365. Traders watching 7,673.52 as the new cash reference. Bullish trigger: a reclaim of Friday's 7,718.60, then Thursday's 7,747.71. Bearish trigger: a slide through September 1's 7,631.47. Wednesday: China CPI and Apple's iPhone event. Thursday: ECB, US PPI, Oracle and Adobe after the close. Friday 12:30 UTC: August CPI. Calendar: calendar.
- Wednesday: China CPI; Apple iPhone event
- Thursday: ECB hike, US PPI, Oracle and Adobe after the close
- Friday 12:30 UTC: August CPI, the print Waller tied to his September vote
- S&P bullish trigger: reclaim 7,718.60 then 7,747.71; bearish: a slide through 7,631.47
