As flagged in this week's note and Saturday's weekend recap, the S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,650.50, West Texas Intermediate settled 100.30 dollars, and Bitcoin held the 80,000 handle. Overnight, crude lost that round number and Scott Bessent called Sunday's talks with China's He Lifeng a "very successful engagement." West Texas Intermediate October futures are near 98.50 dollars. Overnight E-mini December futures are near 7,750. Bitcoin is near 81,580 dollars. Japan is shut through Wednesday. US cash opens 13:30 UTC. This is the morning scorecard, not an instruction.
The Setup: Overnight ES Near 7,750
The S&P 500's last cash print remains Friday's 7,650.50, up 0.17 percent (CNBC, Associated Press). The Nasdaq Composite closed 26,522.55. The Dow closed 51,682.64. US cash has not opened. Figures below are Friday close plus overnight futures. E-mini S&P 500 December futures are near 7,750 as of about 08:00 UTC, labeled overnight futures (MarketWatch 7,750.25, up 0.49 percent from a 7,712.50 settlement; TradingView about 7,755). - Nasdaq closed 26,522.55; Dow closed 51,682.64

Story of the Day: Oil Breaks $100
West Texas Intermediate October futures are near 98.50 dollars (MarketWatch 98.65 at 02:11 EDT, down 1.65 percent; Reuters 98.33 at 0655 GMT, down 1.96 percent), a break of Friday's 100.30 settlement and of the 100 handle that held through last week's fade from a 106.75 Tuesday high. Overnight range about 97.82 to 101.08. Brent is near 101.70 to 102.09 dollars (Bloomberg 101.70, Reuters 102.09), a fourth session of declines, the longest run in three months. November WTI, after the roll, sits near 94 dollars. The October contract expires Tuesday.
The fade is a diplomacy print, not a demand print. ANZ said Saudi Arabia expects the East-West pipeline to return to about half capacity within days after the Houthi drone shutdown. JPMorgan, cited by The Guardian, put Middle East oil flows at 17.1 million barrels a day over the past 10 days, with Saudi Hormuz volumes near 2.9 million barrels a day versus about 700,000 in August. Trump said he would "probably" be open to meeting Iran's Masoud Pezeshkian on the UN sidelines. Traders watching 98.50 as the live reference and 100.30 as Friday's settlement. A reclaim of 100.30, then 106.75, would restore the strike premium. A hold through 97.82 would extend the fade. These are technical reference points, not instructions.
- WTI October ~$98.50 after Friday's settlement $100.30 and a Tuesday $106.75 high
- Brent ~$101.70-$102.09; fourth down session; November WTI ~$94
- Saudi East-West line seen back at about half capacity within days; Hormuz Saudi flows ~2.9M bpd
- Key reference: Friday $100.30 settlement and today's $98.50 last print; October expiry Tuesday

Bessent told reporters the United States had "a very successful engagement" with Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York on Sunday. The two sides discussed a US-China AI dialogue and reciprocal tariff cuts on about 30 billion dollars of goods from each side (Associated Press, The Guardian). China's Foreign Ministry on Monday confirmed Xi Jinping will pay a state visit September 23 to 25, with Thursday's White House talks the live event. Catch up: week-ahead docket.
South Korea's Kospi closed about 7,007.72, up 1.7 percent, the first hold above 7,000 in eight sessions (Associated Press). Samsung Electronics jumped about 5 percent. SK Hynix added about 0.6 percent. Taiwan's Taiex rose 1.1 percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng last printed about 0.9 percent higher near 24,976. The Shanghai Composite gained about 1 percent to 3,949.91. Kitco's range was about 4,352 to 4,384. Traders watching 4,354 then Friday's 4,378 as the repair map. A slide through Kitco's 4,352 low would extend last week's fade. These are technical reference points, not instructions. Bitcoin is near 81,580 dollars (TradingView 81,581; CoinMarketCap about 81,620; Bloomberg 81,518), a hold above 80,000 after Friday's reclaim. What's Next: Chicago Fed, Speakers, Then Trump-Xi
The Chicago Fed National Activity Index prints at 12:30 UTC, consensus about 0.2 after -0.08. Goolsbee, Lagarde, and Macklem speak. US cash opens at 13:30 UTC. AutoZone is Tuesday before the open. Flash PMIs are Wednesday. Trump-Xi is Thursday. Docket: calendar.
Three scenarios frame the session, not a recommendation. In a contained-oil path, WTI holds the fade through 98.50 and ES leans on Friday's 7,650.50 into Chicago Fed. In a diplomacy path, a Pezeshkian or tariff-truce headline would keep crude bidless and chips bid into Thursday. In a scare path, a Hormuz or rare-earth headline would reclaim 100 and test Friday's 7,610.52 low. Traders watching 7,650.50 as the cash reference. Bullish trigger: a reclaim of 7,656.98, then 7,677.02. Bearish trigger: a slide through Friday's 7,610.52 low, then 7,551.81.
- Today 12:30 UTC: Chicago Fed; Goolsbee, Lagarde, Macklem speak; 13:30 UTC: US cash open
- Tuesday: AutoZone. Wednesday: flash PMIs. Thursday: Trump-Xi, SNB, claims
- S&P bullish trigger: reclaim 7,656.98 then 7,677.02; bearish: a slide through 7,610.52
- Oil key reference: WTI $98.50; Friday's $100.30 and Tuesday's $106.75 high still unrepaired
