Story of the Day: Soft PCE, Then a Quarter-End Fade
The Bureau of Economic Analysis printed a cooler August PCE. The headline PCE price index rose 0.3 percent on the month and 3.4 percent from a year ago, below the 3.7 percent consensus (BEA, Trading Economics). Core PCE rose 0.2 percent on the month and 3.0 percent year over year, below the 0.3 percent monthly consensus. Personal income rose 0.2 percent. Real PCE rose 0.6 percent, the most in 17 months. That is the last Fed-preferred inflation print before the October 27-28 FOMC. This morning's hot-print path did not print. The repair path through 7,683.69 printed on the high, then quarter-end selling unwound it.
The 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 5.30 percent from Tuesday's 5.25 percent (Trading Economics 5.295), unshaken by the cooler print. The 30-year is near 5.64 percent. Final second-quarter GDP was revised to a 2.2 percent annualized pace from 1.5 percent, and ADP private payrolls for September exceeded forecasts. CME FedWatch now puts October hike odds below 40 percent, down from about 47 percent this morning. December remains the live hike window. West Texas Intermediate last printed about 90.32 dollars (Markets Insider 4:37 p.m. NYMEX, up 1.05 percent from 89.38), range 88.55 to 91.95, a bounce from this morning's about 89.65 and still short of Tuesday's 94.74 high. EIA crude inventories rose 0.922 million barrels versus a 0.3 million draw expected. Spot gold last printed about 4,157 dollars (TradingView 4,156.865; Trading Economics 4,159.10), a fade from this morning's 4,180, still below 4,200, about a 6.3 percent monthly loss.
