The Big One: Wednesday's FOMC Minutes Recap a Stale Hike
The week pivots on Wednesday, October 7, at 18:00 UTC. The minutes recap Chair Kevin Warsh's first hike, 25 basis points to a 3.75-4.00 percent funds range. Most of the 18 participants penciled in at least one more 2026 move. Mechanics: FOMC guide. August core PCE later printed 3.0 percent year over year. September payrolls printed 29,000 against a 90,000 consensus, unemployment rose to 4.2 percent, and wages slowed to +0.1 percent. CME FedWatch took October 28 hike odds to about 16 to 23 percent from 64 to 70 percent a week earlier. Williams and Bowman speak Tuesday. A hawkish recap can reprice the front end for an hour. The durable question is whether a sizable number still wanted another hike. Docket: calendar.
- Wednesday 18:00 UTC: minutes of the September 15-16 hike to 3.75-4.00%
- Payrolls +29,000 and core PCE 3.0% printed after that meeting
- October 28 hike odds about 16-23%; Williams and Bowman speak Tuesday

How the Week Could Play Out
Three scenarios frame the docket, not a recommendation. In a hawkish-minutes path, the recap shows broad sympathy for a second 2026 hike if ISM holds above 56 with prices paid still above 70. October odds would bounce. In an in-line path, ISM near 55, claims still under 200,000, and data-dependent minutes would leave the 16 to 23 percent October odds intact into next Wednesday's CPI. In a cooling path, ISM toward 53, claims above 230,000, or minutes that show a close call would fade those odds into a China-reopening Friday. Traders watching 7,722.72 as the cash reference. Bullish trigger: a reclaim of Friday's 7,754.67 high toward the August 13 record at 7,816.70. Bearish trigger: a slide through Friday's 7,700.51 low, then 7,616.78. For Bitcoin, a hold of 85,870 dollars then the Asia high near 86,950 is the bullish trigger; a slip through 84,355, then 82,000, is the bearish one. These are observations of the calendar and the price structure, not instructions.
- Hawkish minutes plus a 56-handle ISM would bounce October odds off the high teens
- An in-line cluster (ISM ~55, claims under 200K, data-dependent minutes) would leave 16-23% October odds intact into October 14 CPI
- A cooling mix would fade those odds into China reopen and XRPN. S&P bullish trigger: reclaim 7,754.67 then 7,816.70; bearish: a slide through 7,700.51
