The week in markets: August 9 to 15, 2026. Inflation finally printed, the AI complex split, Nvidia tried to turn chips into an asset class, and the SEC pulled a crypto vote off the calendar. The S&P 500 booked a third straight weekly gain after its first close above 7,800, even as Friday's retail-sales miss took the edge off Thursday's record. For last week's jobs-shock setup, see the August 8 roundup. None of this is a recommendation.

Top Stock Stories of the Week

Equities digested a full inflation week at a record. The S&P 500 advanced about 0.4 percent to 7,785.76, the Nasdaq eked out a 0.1 percent weekly gain, and the Dow finished about 0.6 percent lower. Energy led S&P sectors by roughly 7 percent as Hormuz headlines kept crude bid.

Nvidia Turns Compute Into a $500 Billion Asset Class

Monday's defining corporate headline was a financing architecture, not a print. Nvidia signed memorandums of understanding with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to stand up compute-financing platforms aimed at mobilising more than 500 billion dollars of third-party capital for AI factories and Nvidia hardware. Jensen Huang told CNBC the chips are an "investable asset." The stock still slipped near 3 percent after a Financial Times leak framed the package as a funding scramble. Why it matters: the AI trade is migrating from equity narratives into structured credit. We flagged the leak in the August 11 morning analysis.

CoreWeave Rips. Cisco and Applied Materials Get Punished

The AI-earnings gauntlet the week-ahead note mapped played out as a split screen. CoreWeave reported 2.58 billion dollars of second-quarter revenue, up 112 percent, a 104 billion dollar backlog, and raised full-year revenue guidance to 12.4 to 13.2 billion dollars. The shares jumped about 15 to 18 percent. Then the bar asserted itself. Cisco beat on 17.25 billion dollars of revenue and guided fiscal 2027 sales to 72.2 to 73.4 billion, with 4 billion dollars of hyperscaler AI orders in the quarter, yet the stock fell as much as 8.8 percent on a 7.5 billion dollar full-year AI-revenue forecast and a gross-margin slide to 66.3 percent. Applied Materials posted record 9.12 billion dollars of revenue, guided above consensus, and still dropped about 5 percent as China slipped to 28 percent of sales and the tape compared it with ASML and Lam. At records, a beat is only the starting point. The reaction is about the next twelve months.

Reddit Joins the S&P. Energy Leads the Tape

S&P Dow Jones Indices said Reddit will join the S&P 500 on Tuesday, August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities as AvalonBay merges with Equity Residential into a 69 billion dollar landlord to be named Vivmark Residential. Reddit jumped about 11 to 13 percent. JPMorgan estimated index funds will need to buy roughly 16.7 million shares. Tesla rose about 3.8 percent and Micron about 4.2 percent on Thursday, Cava surged around 16 percent on results, and Globant slumped about 15 percent on a guide cut. Drone names such as AeroVironment firmed after Washington floated tariffs of up to 100 percent on imported drones.

Key Takeaways: Stocks
  • S&P +0.4% for a third weekly gain; first close above 7,800 Thursday
  • Nvidia lined up a $500B compute-financing coalition with six Wall Street giants
  • CoreWeave +15-18% on a $104B backlog; Cisco ~-9% and AMAT ~-5% on guidance reads
  • Reddit joins the S&P on August 18; energy led sectors on the Hormuz bid

Top Crypto Stories of the Week

Digital-asset prices did almost nothing interesting. The stories did. Bitcoin slid from about 65,300 dollars on Monday to near 62,875 by Friday, boxed under 64,000 through both CPI and PPI. Ether finished near 1,878 dollars. XRP hovered around 1 dollar. The week's real tape was institutional. Live levels sit on the ThriveInMarkets homepage.

Goldman Pays Up to $2.25B for Bitcoin and Ether Income ETFs

Wednesday's deal was the largest crypto-adjacent cheque of the week. Goldman Sachs agreed to acquire NEOS Investments for up to 2.25 billion dollars, adding about 30 billion dollars of options-income ETF assets and three crypto products: the Bitcoin High Income ETF (BTCI), with more than 1 billion dollars, plus XBCI and the Ethereum High Income ETF (NEHI). Closing is slated for the first quarter of 2027. Why it matters: Goldman is not buying a token. It is buying the wrapper that turns bitcoin and ether into a monthly-income product for advisors who will never open an exchange account. We covered the print in the August 13 morning analysis.

Fidelity Wants to Stake 100 Percent of FETH

Fidelity filed to let its Ethereum Fund (FETH), with about 898 million dollars of net assets, stake up to 100 percent of its ether under normal conditions and pay quarterly cash rewards, keeping 85 percent of gross staking rewards. Fidelity is the third large US issuer to push staking onto a spot ether product, after Grayscale and BlackRock. The filing is the closest thing this market has to a yield policy for traditional channels.

The SEC Cancels Its Crypto Vote. Grayscale Pulls Three Alt ETFs

The SEC had scheduled a Friday open meeting to propose "Regulation Crypto" and preview an innovation exemption for tokenized stocks. Late Thursday the meeting was canceled with no new date, as Wall Street and White House concerns collided with Chair Paul Atkins' calendar. The Clarity Act was already parked until after the Senate recess. Now the administrative track is parked too. Into that vacuum, Grayscale withdrew S-1 filings for Cardano, Hedera and Polkadot ETFs, news that hit as the week opened and knocked ADA, HBAR and DOT. Cardano's own calendar was not empty: the community approved a 120 million ADA PRIME DeFi fund and USDM went live on the Midnight partner chain. Those are builder headlines. They are not an ETF.

Solana Dates Alpenglow. Bank Leumi Opens the App to SOL

The Solana Foundation pointed Alpenglow activation to October via Agave 4.3, targeting roughly 150 millisecond finality versus about 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT. Solana held near 75 dollars. On Friday, Bank Leumi, Israel's largest bank, partnered with Galaxy Digital to let customers buy, hold and sell bitcoin, ether and Solana inside the Leumi Trade app from early 2027, pending Bank of Israel approval, the first Israeli bank to put SOL next to BTC and ETH in a regulated retail funnel. A Harmony exploit on August 12 minted about 4 billion ONE tokens.

Key Takeaways: Crypto
  • Goldman to buy NEOS for $2.25B, picking up BTCI, XBCI and NEHI
  • Fidelity FETH seeks to stake up to 100% of ether and pay quarterly cash
  • SEC canceled Friday's Reg Crypto vote; Grayscale dropped ADA, HBAR and DOT ETFs
  • Solana Alpenglow aimed at October; Bank Leumi x Galaxy will offer BTC, ETH and SOL

M&A, Partnerships, Deals

Deal flow was less about classic takeovers and more about who owns the pipes. Nvidia's platforms are still memorandums, but they put six of the world's largest capital allocators on the hook to underwrite AI compute as infrastructure. Goldman's NEOS bid is a straight asset-manager acquisition with crypto inside the box. The AvalonBay and Equity Residential combination, which created Reddit's S&P vacancy, is a 69 billion dollar real-estate merger due later this year. Bank Leumi and Galaxy still needs a central-bank nod. The White House drone-tariff package repriced a thin group of US manufacturers overnight. Capital is concentrating around AI infrastructure, packaged crypto, and domestic hardware.

Key Takeaways: Deals
  • Nvidia x six managers: up to $500B of third-party AI-compute capital
  • Goldman / NEOS $2.25B is the week's largest closed-form crypto cheque
  • AvalonBay / Equity Residential merger opens Reddit's S&P slot
  • Leumi x Galaxy and drone tariffs show distribution and industrial policy still move prices

Regulatory & Macro

Macro did what the Monday morning note said it would: it set the rate path, then handed the week back to single names. July CPI rose 0.1 percent on the month and 3.4 percent year over year; core held at 2.5 percent annually. July PPI was unchanged against a plus 0.2 percent look-ahead. That pair pulled September hike odds from around 50 percent a month earlier toward the low 30s by Friday. Then the consumer blinked. July retail sales fell 0.6 percent, the first drop in nine months, and the preliminary August Michigan sentiment index slumped to 51.0 from 55.2. Combined with last week's 23,000-job July loss, the data give the Federal Reserve under Chair Kevin Warsh cover to hold at the September 15 to 16 meeting. They also say the spending engine is no longer a free lunch. Gold tagged 4,449 dollars and reversed toward 4,376. Crude climbed from the high 70s toward 82.33 dollars as Washington threatened an indefinite naval blockade of Iran. The industry got a Goldman cheque and a Fidelity staking file. It still does not have a rule.

Key Takeaways: Macro & Regulation
  • CPI +0.1% / 3.4% y/y; PPI unchanged; September hike odds ~31%
  • Retail sales -0.6%; Michigan sentiment 51.0, ending two months of improvement
  • WTI ~$82 on an indefinite Iran blockade threat; gold reversed off $4,449
  • SEC Reg Crypto vote canceled; Clarity Act still waiting on the Senate

Week Ahead: What to Watch

The inflation week is over. Next week is about whether the consumer, the index, and Hormuz cooperate.

  • Monday, August 17: Empire State manufacturing and the NAHB housing index open a light US data week after a retail-sales miss and a 51-handle on Michigan.
  • Tuesday, August 18: Reddit joins the S&P 500 before the open. The same morning, Home Depot reports fiscal second-quarter results, with Wall Street near 47 billion dollars of revenue, the first mega-retail read on whether July's 0.6 percent sales drop was a one-month payback.
  • Tuesday data: July housing starts (seen near 1.3 million) and industrial production add a bricks-and-mortar check on the same consumer.
  • Geopolitics and the Fed: an indefinite Iran blockade remains the wildcard for crude above 80 dollars. The next CPI is September 11. The FOMC is September 15 to 16. Until then the tape is trading a hold, not a cut.
Key Takeaways: Week Ahead
  • Reddit S&P add and Home Depot earnings share Tuesday, August 18
  • Empire State, NAHB, housing starts and industrial production fill a light calendar
  • Hormuz / Iran blockade headlines remain the oil wildcard above $80
  • Next hard inflation print is September 11; FOMC is September 15-16
